Day 8-Yankee Boy Basin!

We decided to go try Yankee Boy Basin today-waaaaay up in the mountains.  I thought it was mostly a meadow up there, but it was so much more.  First of all, it was a terrifying drive up this tiny, rocky, double rough road.  If you met a car going up, you had the right of way and the other had to back up!  Thankfully, whenever we saw a car coming we would pull over on a slightly wider area of the road.  It was something.  We met a Lexus 4 wheel drive that had turned around and we kept going past it and the guy turned around and hollared, you got it in four wheel drive???  Jeff said, it's not four wheel drive, and he said "oh...good luck."   I think we were the only two wheel drive vehicle up there when we finally got there.  There is a tourist company that drives you around with seats in the back of the pickup, up high and Jeff waved at him and said, Do you think we can make it up farther?  This guy looked our suburban over and said, this is as far as I would go if I was driving that.  ha!  I think he was surprised we even made it that far.  I think my knuckles were white going up there.  Cliffs on one side, overhangs above, rough road...uff da!

We were probably up 11,600 feet, so close to the summit of a 14,000 ft mountain, Sneffles.  The mountains all around were huge and there were twin waterfalls that we got hike around at.  Everything was just so majestic.  Now for pictures.
Bright eyed and ready for the day!  Where we going, Dada?

Overhang...a picture of us going under it is later on the way back down.

Hikers with fanny packs are cool.

Turn around, Rachey and let me take your picture.

Yay!

Mmmm hmmm.  That's right!  Jeff found a cool place and this was the way to get everyone there!

Snow!  A tiny bit of snow left!  First we had seen all the time we've been here.

Perched by one of the waterfalls.

There's my Rachey!!!

Zane took this!

Poke, poke.

Lunch spot!  No Miss Mouse this time, but two birds came up for a hand out.  They knew this program.

Climb every mountain!  Forge every stream!  Follow every rainbow!  Till you find your dreeeeeeeam!  :)

Two hikers coming back!  Rachey and I opted to wait for them.  She threw a million rocks into the stream beside us.  And got back scratchies.

Where's Jeff?

This was taken on the way down.  Wish we had one where we had parked!

Old mining gear.  Zane loves this stuff.

For my mama!  I thought these were pretty:

The roof of our suburban and the overhang as we went back under.  I stuck my hand out the window. Of course!

We stopped at a park in Ouray on the way back to the cabin.  Fish pond!

uh...
We had a fantastic day in Yankee Boy Basin.  It rained this evening up there, we could see it from our cabin, so we are happy we decided to go today.  Tonight we had hotdogs with chili and carrot sticks.  Yum.
